The project I’ve never heard the swan song, draws from a poignant experience I had
near my residence in Rotterdam. Over several days, I encountered the bodies of various
waterfowl and bird species in the river, each one a stark reminder of the fragile
coexistence between urban spaces and non-human life. Struck by this haunting yet
poetic encounter, I began investigating the city’s relationship with its avian inhabitants. This journey has led me through the surrounding wetlands and museums, photographing
preserved specimens of animals that met untimely ends in the urban environment, creating a body of work that speaks to the fragile lives that occupy these liminal spaces.
I try to trace how these changes reflect broader questions around ecological
sustainability and the emotional bonds between humans and non-human life forms. This
ongoing project seeks to engage viewers in a conversation that extends beyond the
images of deceased birds: it challenges perceptions of shared spaces, urban mortality, and the complex emotional relationships that form between humans and avian life. The
thematic intersections of waterfowl, darkness, and dystopian imaginings, ghostly
presences, and fictional narratives are central to this exploration, opening new dialogues
around the ecological tensions within urbanized landscapes.
